Uniqueness of the luscious lychee
captured in new VITA juice drinks
The lychee is sometimes referred to
as the "pearl of the orient " and it has long
held a special place in the hearts of the Chinese people.
Vitasoy International Holdings Ltd. has recently launched
the VITA Lychee Juice Drink, which is the latest juice
beverage of the Group.
Available all year round in 250mL paper-packs, VITA
Lychee Juice Drink captures that special, slightly nutty
and sweet flavour of this favourite fruit.
The pearly-coloured flesh of this small oval-shaped
fruit is revered for its fragrant, sweet and juicy flavour.
It is native to southern China and has been cultivated
for more than 2,000 years - it is said that the first
book written on fruit culture was about the lychee,
written in the mid 11th century by Ts'si Hsiang, a famous
Chinese scholar.
Emperors were especially taken with the unique perfume
and taste of the lychee. There are several stories of
fresh lychees being transported from the south to the
northern court - a long and arduous journey on horseback
in the days before the invention of the steam train
and the jet airplane. One tale relates how Emperor Kao
Tsu in 200BC requested fresh lychees after he first
tasted the dried version. And another tells the story
of the Tang Emperor Hsuan Tsung (AD712-756) who asked
for fresh lychees to be delivered to a favourite lady
at court - this might be where the romantic characteristics
of the lychee originated.
The lychee is now grown in hot and sunny areas around
the world - a mature tree in fruit is a magnificent
sight. But for Cantonese people, it is a sign that summer
has truly arrived when fresh lychees from China arrive
in the local markets and stores.
