Vitasoy launches new scheme to boost
glass bottle recycling
Hong Kong, November 15, 2000 — Leading manufacturer
of soy drinks, Vitasoy International Holdings Limited
("VIHL"), today launched a new scheme in collaboration
with Hong Kong's major retail convenience store chains
and charitable organizations to encourage consumers
to return used VITASOY glass bottles for recycling.
Under the Vitasoy "Glass Bottle Recycling
Scheme", 7-Eleven Convenience Store ("7-Eleven"),
Circle-K Convenience Store ("Circle-K"), the
Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command ("Salvation
Army") and World Vision Hong Kong ("World
Vision") will become collection centres for VITASOY
glass bottles.
VIHL will give HK 50 cents for each empty
VITASOY bottle collected from the participating collection
centres. For example, the Company will give Circle-K
Convenience Store HK 50 cents for each empty bottle
collected; and Circle-K will pass the HK 50 cents onto
the consumer who returns the empty VITASOY bottle. Alternatively,
Vitasoy will donate HK 50 cents to the Salvation Army
and the World Vision for each empty bottle collected
by them. No deposit is required.
"The Group has a consistent policy
of collecting and reusing glass bottles that are returned
to us. This policy has been used for several decades
and has never been terminated," said Mr. Fransis
Kong Ming-yin, Managing Director of VIHL's Hong Kong
operation, at the launch of the scheme.
"The new initiative is an extension
of our corporate policy and practice of encouraging
the return of reusable VITASOY glass bottles, and we
are glad to have the support of 7-Eleven, Circle-K,
Salvation Army and World Vision," said Mr. Kong.
"The new scheme carries the advantage
of being more convenient and giving more choice to consumers
as they don't have to return the glass bottle to where
it came from but can return it to any of the over 500
collection centres now set up throughout Hong Kong,"
explained Mr Kong.
According to Mr. Kong, VIHL will clean and reuse all
the empty bottles collected and will absorb the cost
associated with the Scheme.
"We believe it is money well spent in view of its
implication for environmental protection and sustainable
development," added Mr Kong.
Mr Wallace Tse, Buying and Marketing Manager
of Circle-K, said: "We are pleased to participate
in this meaningful scheme and play a role in environmental
protection in Hong Kong."
Mr Envoy Simon Wong, Director for Public
Relations, Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command,
said: "Everybody is responsible for ensuring a
clean and healthy living environment for future generations
and we believe the scheme can help us achieve this objective."
Mr John Ching, Local Ministry Manager,
World Vision Hong Kong, said: "We are honoured
to become a collection centre for Vitasoy glass bottles
and we hope that the whole community will support this
initiative in preserving the Earth's resources."
VIHL will be publicizing the new scheme
through advertisements, posters and leaflets. It will
continue to invite more organizations, including charities,
schools and other trade outlets, to join the scheme.
Any party who is interested in participating in the
Scheme can call the Vitasoy Hotline at 2468 9645.
